COMMUNITY SERVICE ACTIVITIES
1997 VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR NOMINATION
In 1997 the Club was nominated for the third or fourth time for this award;
this time by DeSoto Trail Elementary School. We did not win the award,
but the community service work of the Killearn Kiwanis Club is something
of which we are very proud.

STARTER KITS: STARTER KITS ARE for underprivileged parents of homebound
infants in the unit and are provided approximately once each month. The
Killearn member in charge watches the sales at stores like Target and KMart
to accumulate the following types of items: Cloth diapers, rubber pants,
diaper pins, receiving blankets, crib sheets, bibs, one piece sleepers,
tee-shirts, socks and booties, baby wash cloths, bottles, baby outfits.
The club expects to spend approximately $900 for these kits in each community
service year.
DISCHARGE BOOKLETS: In addition to the Starter Kits described above, the
club has provided funding for publication of special Discharge Booklets
for the parents of new born infants who are taking their children home.
These booklets, which cost $250, provide important and helpful information
for the parents to use in taking care of these high risk children.
MILWAUKEE CRIBS: Another item that the club has provided is a Milwaukee
Crib at a cost of $1,200. This is a special crib which can accomodate twin
infants to help maintain "to-getherness" in the family during their stay
