President Jim Barger's Report to The Club (June 24, 2010)
Review of The Six
Objects of Kiwanis
1. To give primacy to the human and spiritual
rather than to the material values of life.
2. To encourage the daily living of the
Golden Rule in all human relationships.
3. To promote the adoption and the
application of higher social, business, and professional standards.
4. To develop, by precept and example, a
more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.
5. To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a
practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and
to build better communities.
6. To cooperate in creating and
maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the
increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.
CLUB
EXCELLENCE TOOL
Although not all Club Excellence Tool
questionnaires were returned, those who did return the form, over 85% of club
membership returned the form, we found out that the club was way above average
in how the general membership felt about the administration of the club. The October 1st. start date of the 2009 -2010
New Kiwanis Year therefore went very smoothly because we were able to start on
a sound foundation created by past executive officers and leadership.
The
Dictionary Project
Norm Mears chaired this
committee and we provided dictionaries for some 460 3rd graders in the
Northeast area schools. We provided
dictionaries to Gilchrist, DeSoto Trail, Hawks Rise and this year to The
K-Kids
We installed officers and
club members for the 2009-10 school year at Gilchrist Elementary. K-Kids members are joint members of K-kids
and the school’s student government.
Members are grades 3 through 5.
About 50 members were inducted.
An ice-cream social followed the induction ceremony. We also installed a new group of K-Kids
students at
A short time later,
Killearn Kiwanis volunteered at Gilchrist to beautify the school grounds. The beautification project was sponsored by
K-kids and more than 120 students, parents and Kiwanians showed up for the
Saturday work session. Kathy Cole, John
Ryor, LeRoy Thompson, Al Eppinger, Barbara Bearinger, Jim Varley and others
have been tirelessly working with the school sponsors to make these clubs a
complete success.
Another
project for you to help with.

Membership
Growth Development
A two year trial for a new membership
category was developed this year for people who would like to serve but can't
make a commitment to regular attendance. You were encouraged to print a copy
of the new membership rule to review when you talk with prospective new
members.
Please make a special effort to approach potential members (including former
members) over the next weeks to discuss this alternative membership. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this membership
program, we were able to attract a past member, Jan Collier, to re-join and a
new member to affiliate with us, Steve Sullivan.
We Collected
Wire Clothes Hangers
This is an on-going
Southside Club project to raise funds for their children's projects. We were
asked to clean out our closets and bring in the hangers. Gavin Boone, a member

Partners/Sponsors
A new fund raising concept, above and beyond the Usual
ones used by similar Golf Tournaments.
Instead of just soliciting sponsorships for the golf tournament Al Eppinger suggested we solicit Partners/Sponsors for
year round support of our Community Service Programs. Partners/Sponsors will
get the same recognition as in the golf tournament but, in addition, will be
listed on a new page of our web site. This was a great idea, as sponsorships did
not decline a great deal in spite of the poor economic conditions.
Guardian Ad
Litim
We were able
to continue our annual support of the Guardian Ad Litim program. We presented a check for $150 to the
organization as Debbie Moore, one of the organization’s officials gave a
program to us. Guardian Ad Litim is one of our usual budget items.

MEMBERSHIP GROWTH EMPHASIS
John Ryor, as Membership
Chair, has worked very hard to develop a new approach to help our club grow.
The goal is to reach 40 members, a size that we will be able to accommodate
physically and give us a good group to support the project outcomes that we
want achieve. We all need to participate. It is important to our future. Thank you, John for your hard work on this
project.

willing, he will ascend to Lt. Gov. of Division 3 starting October 1, 2011.
He will gladly accept all the support we can give him during that time. We
applaud Tommy for giving his service to our club, Division and District.
