AKTION CLUB - VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
The aKtion Club was nominated by LARC in the Nonprofit Organization category for the 2001 award in this program sponsored by the Tallahassee Democrat. It was picked as one of the four finalists in the category. The awards luncheon was held Thursday, April 26th at the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center. The club received $500 for the charity of its choice.
THE FOLLOWING EMAIL FROM KILLEARN KIWANIS MEMBER BEN COLMERY SAYS ABOUT EVERYTHING THAT NEEDS TO BE SAID.
"In 1991, on behalf of my Killearn Kiwanis
Club, I founded a
Tallahassee aKtion Club. aKtion [the
"K" is for "Kiwanis"]
Clubs are members of a family of Kiwanis sponsored
clubs
which include Circle K clubs (college), Key
Clubs (high
school) Builder Clubs (junior high schools--the
Kiwanis
motto is "We build."), K-Kids (I think that's
the
name--grammar schools), and Golden K (senior
citizens).
An aKtion club is a community service club
for adults who
are "developmentally challenged" (mentally
retarded). It
does things for others, not themselves --
things like
quarterly road clean-ups, furnishing an impoverished
family
meals at Thanksgiving and Christmas, obtaining
and wrapping
Christmas gifts for that entire family, and
raising money
for the local Ronald McDonald house and the
Kiwanis
International's Iodine Deficiency Disease
program. It raises
money for its projects by car washes and the
like. The club
meets biweekly with a program of club business
and then
speakers. It also does fun things like
attending baseball,
basketball, and hockey games, and having picnics
and
banquets.
I ran the club for its first six years and
have actively
assisted since. Bob Bull, my successor, has
done a marvellous job. So
have the club members. I'm bonded to
them, and they, to me.
The club has been recognized as the best road
clean-up
organization in Leon County.
Last year it was state co-champion as "best"
among some 35
Florida Kiwanis-sponsored aKtion Clubs.
THE TALLAHASSEE DEMOCRAT newspaper sponsors
an annual
"Volunteer of the Year" Award program for
Tallahassee
volunteers and volunteer organizations.
It gives awards in
several categories. Our Killearn Kiwanis
Club had been
nominated (by others) twice, but never did
win its category,
"Non-Profit Organizations"
Our aKtion Club was nominated this year by
the Leon ARC
(formerly Association for Retarded Citizens)
in that
category, "Non-Profit Organizations."
Out of 23 organizations nominated in that category
this
year, our aKtion Club was named the "2001
Volunteer
Organization of the Year." It deserved
to win.
I'm happily bragging.
Regards, Ben

aKtion Club Members attended accompanied by Bob Bull and chaperone parents
Bob & Peggy Downing. Members were selected to attend based on their
participation in club activities during the entire year.

Car Wash
The 2006 car wash was held Saturday, August 12th.
(Raised $174 on August 9th, 2003
to be used exclusively for 2003 Thanksgiving and Christmas adopted family
support)
The 2004 car wash was cancelled due to the untimely death of Chairman
Fred Parker.
These funds helped the AKtion Club assist the
2001 adopted family from November 2001 through
April 2003 a total of 18 months
and on December 12, 2002 members of the Killearn Kiwanis Club passed a hat
and collected $224 to keep the
family's electricity from being disconnected later that day.
