KILLEARN KIWANIS

PRESIDENTS MID YEAR REPORT

APRIL 24, 2008

JOHN RYOR

We have now completed the first half year of our 2007-2008 program year. It’s hard to believe but October, November, December, January, February and March have come and gone.

In August we adopted a set of program objectives and a budget to achieve those objectives. In truth, we adopted a series of activities for each of the three levels of Kiwanis, the Florida District, Division 3 and for our own local Killearn Kiwanis club. For this report we will discuss only our Killearn Kiwanis plans, many of which have coincided with District and Division activities.

The Killearn Kiwanis program priorities for 07-08 fiscal year are:

1. To provide monetary and other support for the Division 3 Miracle Field Project.

In that regard our organization and its affiliates, the Aktion Club and the Key Club, led the way in Division 3 by contributing in excess of $8500 (Div.3 has raised over $33,000) to the effort. Steve Mayberry s contributed much time in helping contact various corporate foundations in an effort to raise more money. Fund raising is ongoing and the original completion date had to be moved to accommodate water management concerns.

2. To assist in helping with the efforts of our Aktion Club.

Under the guidance of Bob Bull and assistance from Ben Colmery the Aktion Club has engaged in many projects. The Aktion Club has adopted the Breton Institute for Family Living. The Institute is a temporary home for expectant mothers. It also provides training toward independent living. The Action Club has provided over $225 in food and other necessities, many of our members donated items to that effort. Additionally the club raised $441 for the Miracle Field and has raised over $558 (some matching funds from kkc and from larc) to provide “bed kits” for needy children around the world. The club has also conducted a number of clean-up projects on Dempsey mayo road.

** We have not done a good job in conducting Interclub meetings with our Aktion Club. There have been only two so far this year. We can yet improve that record by signing up to participate in the remaining Aktion Club meetings

3. Assist and provide support for making our Chiles High School Key Club a vibrant option for Chiles High School students to provide service to their community.

Richard Ziegler has served as our main liaison with an assist from John Robbins over the last couple of years and the club has thrived as one of the most successful key clubs in this part of the state. The Key Club took part in 17 different service projects this year logging a total of more than 3500 hours of volunteer time. Our Key Club raised more than $1400 for the “miracle field” project. Most recently, 10 members of the club assisted in putting a new roof on the house of a needy family. On March 5th the Key Club held their major annual fund raiser called the “Lord Lawton” event. Stephen Weeks was the winner of the event. It was attended by over 350 patrons. The 2008 winner of our earl Buffton scholarship was Maria Cristali Harper. In addition, this year the faculty adviser and three members attended the district key club convention.

** We have likewise not done a very effective job of conducting Interclubs with our Key Club this year. Some of that has been due to a change in meeting schedule at Chiles High from a 7:30 PM meeting time to a lunch hour time. While this year’s Key Club meetings have been completed, I think we can do better next year by circulating a sign up sheet early in the year, something I did not do this year.

4. To make “young children priority one” truly a priority one..

While we have done a good deal over the years working with TMH and Pregnancy Help and Information Center and the March of Dimes etc., much remains to be done. The diaper drop had its origins in this club. For the last few years it has been an important project for us and for Division 3. Tommy Mills has been instrumental in coordinating our efforts for the last couple of years. This is an area in which we could use some help. As plans unfold we will keep you up to speed on the needs. Also another important project designed to help children is the initiative by Al to get a new K-kids club started this year at Desoto Trail Elementary School, with the help of A Eppinger, Tommy Mills and “L T”Thompson the club is scheduled for start up next September. We have also committed to helping Guardian ad Litem/child advocates with their annual fundraiser which is an open house to be held at Evening Rose on May 9th. Florida District first lady Sharon Taylor as endorsed this program as her project for 2007-2008. Killearn Kiwanis will be a bronze sponsor of the event and we will assist and Secretary Jim Varley is selling tickets for the event.

5. Assist Division 3 with the dictionary project

This, like the Miracle Field is a Division 3 project which remains to be launched at which time we will participate. It now appears the Dictionary Project will be delayed until September. Nancy Shank will be coordinating the event for Division 3. I have volunteered myself as the liaison from our club to the project. When this project is launched we will let you know what kind and how much help will be needed.

Increase Killearn Kiwanis membership with specific emphasis on increasing women as members.

Increasing the number of women in our membership has been a goal for some time. And we have had some modest success in recruiting female members but we have not been good on the retention end of the equation. This year our membership chairman, George Sweat, has scheduled a special event for recruiting women into our organization. As part of that effort, we were all expected to draft at least one person of the female persuasion to attend breakfast as our guest on January 24th. While we have inducted one new member since then, we had seven women participate in the breakfast but so far have not been successful in recruiting any of them.

7. To support other Division 3 clubs where possible

This is an objective designed to help the Kiwanis movement in our Division. There are some small clubs that struggle from year to year to serve their communities. We can help by supporting their fund raisers, like golf tournaments and other efforts ( sales of Vidalia onions, oranges, etc.). And we have done that and will continue to help where we can. This year Lt. Governor Al has led the effort to start a new club at Southside. On April 3rd, at the Southside Community Center with Tommy Mills and me in attendance, Lt. Governor Al Eppinger inducted 32 members into the fledgling club and installed its officers. The Killearn Kiwanis Club has assisted with that effort. We contributed a small amount of money to help the fledgling group conduct a “food for needy families” project at Christmas time. We also assisted with the playground project at the Florida State Elementary School which was a major first project for the Southside Club. Lastly the Killearn Kiwanis club purchased the Kiwanis club pins that were presented to each member during the induction ceremony. I would particularly like to thank Charley Esher for coordinating the interclub golf competition with the other clubs in our Division and to thank those members (George Sweat, Steve Mayberry, Vince Puccio, Charley Esher, Al Eppinger et. al.) who’ve donated their time and their money to play in the tournaments.

8. To serve as the host club for planning and carrying out the Annual Division 3 dinner for the Florida District President.

It was our turn to sponsor the annual visit by the Florida District Governor to Division 3. This year its success was even more important because our own Al Eppinger is Lt. Governor of our division. This was a project in which everyone could and, for the most part, did participate. To encourage a high level of participation, the dinner served as our meeting for that day. Johnnye Luebkemann played the piano during the reception. Johnnye also led the singing of “America”, Charlie Nuzum led the pledge, “L.T.” Thompson gave the invocation and Mike Phillips led a brass ensemble with entertainment following dinner. Governor Mark Taylor spoke of his hopes and plans for Kiwanis in Florida and the first lady promoted the Guardian ad Litem program as her project for the year. Jim Barger, Johnnye Luebkemann, Charlie Esher, George Sweat, Dennis Faust, and Tom Fackender assisted in making the event a success.

9. To support and strengthen our annual Killearn Kiwanis charity golf classic as our only fund raiser.

For twenty two (22) years the Killearn Kiwanis golf classic has been our bread and butter. When we started we were one of only a handful of charity golf fundraisers…now there are literally dozens every year. The golf committee chaired by Charlie Nuzum was charged with looking at the tournament in all of its aspects toward making it more attractive to those who play and hopefully to generate more revenue. In addition to Charlie, Steve Mayberry, Al Eppinger, Bob Orsillo, Dave Columbo, Chuck Walter, Don Griffin, Vince Puccio, Charlie Esher, George Sweat and Jim Barger have done their parts in helping reshape the tournament.

Everything was taken into consideration, public relations, promotions, prizes for participants, sponsorships, player fees, mulligans, putting contest and format were all discussed. I think it is safe to say that except for the format of the tournament, which stays the same, almost every other aspect of the tournament has undergone some change. One major piece that does not change is the need for your participation.in signing sponsors and players to collecting donated prizes. As the old saying goes, “the only letter in the word success that really matters is “u” I am excited about the possibilities for this year’s tournament and hope you are too.

Obviously, these nine goals are not the only activities in which our club has been engaged in the first half of this year. Our Community Service Committee under the direction of Dave Colombo has carried out such projects as the Gretchen Everhart Thanksgiving baskets , the Christmas Connection, Habitat for Humanity, Hospice Tree of Remembrance , Salvation Army Bell Ringing, and Timberlane Road clean-up, and assisting with playground construction just to mention a few.

Johnnye Luebkemann has kept track of our birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions. She has also kept us informed regarding news on our health and welfare as well as watching over the needs of Refuge House including the collecting of various toiletries to be distributed to residents. Bob Gragnani has regularly collected books for distribution to veterans groups and items of clothing for youngsters at TMH

Also we were one of the few clubs that managed to complete inter-clubs with all the other clubs in division 3 last year, thanks to the efforts of “C. K.” Krause, and it that we will repeat that accomplishment again this year. He has also been responsible for the collection of literally 100s of pounds of aluminum tabs which benefit the Ronald McDonald house he has been responsible for the collection of 100s of Campbell soup labels which benefit the Gretchen Everhart School.

Over a year ago Al Eppinger agreed to be the Lt. Governor of division 3 for the 2007-08 fiscal year. Al has done an extraordinary job of providing leadership for division 3. He set high goals and but for his energy and commitment it is unlikely that we would have had either a new Southside Kiwanis or a new K-kids club at Desoto Trail Elementary School. We promised Al that if he took on the leadership role we would follow his lead. Several Killearn Kiwanis members, including Chuck Walter, George Sweat, Tommy Mills, Jim Barger, “L.T.” Thompson, Charley Esher, Ben Colmery (as officers, trainers, project workers etc.) have assisted Al in moving the Division 3 agenda along. I know Al would join me in thanking them for their efforts.

Finally, the report wouldn’t be complete without praise for the work of the Administrative committee. Chuck Walter has always done an outstanding job with our Blarney Sheet and in co-coordinating our public relations efforts generally and in promoting and administering the golf tournament specifically; Jim Barger has done excellent work in keeping our financial matters in order; Jim Varley, as secretary has provided invaluable service in keeping our records and in filing reports. The three of them along with Steve Mayberry have made sure that the meeting room here at the country club was prepared for our gathering each Thursday.

All in all it has been a busy and successful first half of the year but we still have a golf tournament to complete, a couple of playground to refurbish and a diaper drop to conduct. Thank you one and all for your dedication and commitment to Killearn Kiwanis.
