Division 3 Council Meeting Minutes; Monday, January 14, 2008

The next meeting date will be April 21st rather than April 14th due to scheduling conflicts. Lt. Gov. Al has confirmed the hall is available.

THE MEETING

Call to Order - Lake Jackson 7:08 PM

Pledge - Jackie Larson, Lake Jackson

Invocation - Keith Roberts, Lake Jackson

Introduction of attendees by club/organization. All clubs were represented except Perry abd Greensboro. Robert Moore, Key Club Lt. Gov. and Ramon Snow Circle K Lt. Gov. and Jessica Wilson of FSU Circle K were present. Capital City, Lake Jackson, Northside and Killearn qualified for interclub with at least four members present.

Minutes of the previous October 2008 meeting were approved as emailed to Clubs.

Treasurer’s Report as of January 14, 2008 presented by Jim Barger and approved. There was some discussion of disbursement of funds to Southern Scholarship Foundation for Ralph Davis House maintenance, and the process for clubs payments of annual contributions to the KI and District Foundations. The Treasurer will send checks to Foundations with info copies to Trustee Larry Spalding.

Old Business

Jon Winters of The Northside Club was elected as Lt. Gov. for 2008/09.

The proposal to change the bylaws to increase dues from $1 to $3 per club member was approved with 2 clubs totaling 5 voting members present voting “No“. There were 20 “Yes“ votes. Lake Jackson requested that expenses paid from Division funds for Lt. Gov. travel expenses be limited to required conventions.

Division/club Web-Site and Activities Calendar - Clubs were reminded to submit their scheduled activities, especially fund raisers to Chuck Walter (emailto: cwalt3@comcast.net) for inclusion in the Div 3 Website calendar.

Review last Quarter. The Southside club is progressing and should have at least 25 members to request chartering this quarter. The KI recruiter will be here in February to help Southside build membership and will be available to help other clubs also.

New Business

Membership Growth - 100 women in 100 days – George Sweat called upon club officers to lead their club boards and member with a strong commitment to build membership. George will be available to help if called upon by clubs. Havana already has 6 new members this year.

Club Leadership Education - Jo Willis - March 1st 8AM to noon at First Baptist, Tallahassee. Encourage members to attend even if not officers. There is no midyear traveling event this year. This is our opportunity to learn and grow. Also, we want to have a good turnout for District trainers who are giving their time for our benefit. Volunteers are also needed to help with setup and reception. Call Jo.or emailto: joawillis@embarqmail.com.

Governor’s visit, January 31st - John Ryor - an informal survey indicated about 47 members of 7 clubs not counting Killearn (the host) will be attending.

Lt Gov Al’s visit to clubs. Official Visits will be during the next month. Lt. Gov. Al requests that each club contactl him with a proposed time when he can present the program.

Playground build at FSUS Elementary School. Jan 18 to 21 - 8 AM each day. Clubs were encouraged to join Killearn and the new Southside club in the project.

Infant Mortality - Jerry Moore - The Democrat is trying to put together a working group to study and develop solutions to this problem. Jerry has advised them Kiwanis wants to be involved, and is on the list to be notified when work begins.

Division 3 Golf Competition.- Killearn is developing a proposal for a Division wise golf competition for the administrative year which is designed to encouraged to increase participation by more members in the fund raisers, and to get the winners more funds for their service projects while having fun and fellowship. The concept will be emailed to club officers by the end of February. The first scheduled tournament is the Tallahassee Club on March 31st.

Reports

Guardian ad Litem - Marcia Hilty-Reinshuttle of Guardian ad Litem and Greg Nichols, VP Child Advocates II explained some of the needs of the program in the 6 counties and their fund raiser during the Parade of Homes. They will come around to our clubs to bring tickets and explain the event.

Foundations contribution - Larry Spalding will present a program on the District Foundation upon request.

Division Key Club plans and activities - Robert Moore passed out a schedule of Key Club activities. Heather Deiter made an appeal for clubs to help with Key Leader Training and convention expenses.

K-Kids Clubs in elementary schools - Heather Dieter - Several K-Kids clubs are in the process of being formed. There will be a Builders Club at FSUS Middle School.

10K for Long Range Vision, June 2008 - Earl Cushing - The $1,000 has been raised; actually over subscribed.

Miracle Field Update - Jim Wylie - Delay due to storm water drainage problems. Kiwanis has contributed $42,219 of the $179,512.52 raised so far. There are still grants pending and possible grants to be submitted. Other major donors are being approached. A new ground breaking date is to be determined, but there will still be a Day at the Park on April 5th, either at the Miracle Field site at 10 AM or at the FSU baseball game at 7 PM.

Southern Scholarship House (Ralph Davis House) - Jim Wylie - Balance in the maintenance fund is $8,100. Southern Scholarship Foundation has spent $56,990 on renovations and improvements. A fund raising campaign will be carried out throughout the Florida District to support free scholarships for residents. The question of gifts to the Southern Scholarship Ralph Davis House will be addressed at the next meeting.

Individual Club Activities - Clubs reported many service and fund raising projects for the first quarter.
